ASEAN Sub-Regional Ministerial Meeting on Transboundary Haze Pollution
Assessment:
Indonesia’s serious haze problem, caused by yearly land-clearing fires, has been widely detrimental to its regional neighbors, particularly Malaysia and Singapore. On 13 October, environmental ministers from five ASEAN-member countries met in Indonesia to discuss ways to tackle the haze issue, which has consequently caused serious health-related problems and significant economic loss resulting from disruption in tourism and travel. Malaysia and Singapore urged Indonesia to take swift action in reducing the haze, while voicing their assistance and support. However, in the end, Indonesia claims the meetings were a failure in garnering regional help, leaving Jakarta to deal with the problem on its own.
