The H5N1 virus has also spread to a fifth area in Vietnam -- infecting chickens at a farm in Vinh Long province, less than 140 kilometres from heavily populated Ho Chi Minh City. Outbreaks of H5N1 among poultry have already been confirmed in four provinces in Vietnam's southern Mekong delta. Meanwhile, Japanese health officials are investigating the first possible outbreak of bird flu in poultry since 2004. Chickens at a farm on Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu have tested positive in preliminary tests for H5N1. Health workers say those results will not be confirmed until the weekend. Since the virus re-emerged in Asia in 2003, outbreaks have been confirmed in more than 48 countries and territories, according to data from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Since the beginning of January 2006, more than 30 countries have reported outbreaks, in most cases involving wild birds such as swans. (Cont)
