China’s Hu Attends the G-20

Assessment: China’s President Hu Jintao went to London to attend the G20 riding a wave of nationalism and boasting an economy that could very well surpass Japan as the world's second largest behind that of the U.S. In their first ever encounter, President Obama met Hu on the sidelines of the summit, a meeting described by some as "the G2," where Hu stressed China's commitment to strengthen macro-economic control and expand domestic demand. In a commitment to overcome the world's economic miasma, the two leaders agreed to work hand-in-hand to energize world economic growth and strengthen the world's financial system. Hu has Beijing postured for a move toward center stage with financial moves that indicate a more confident diplomacy and a larger role for the yuan in international finance. Domestic problems, however, may yet foreshadow his ability to move China immediately into position as a respected economic and geopolitical global power.
