Fiji Military Takes Control - A Special Press Summary
Download here (.doc)
Assessment
: Fijian Army Chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama followed through on weeks of threats against Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and his administration by overthrowing Suva’s democratically-elected government on Tuesday. Promising that the military takeover would not be permanent, Bainimarama quickly appointed a political-novice as interim prime minister and plans to surrender presidential powers back to Ratu Josefa Iloilo next week, although a timetable for new elections has not been set. The fallout from yesterday's events have already come into play with the international community and regional supporters poised to withdraw the significant financial aid which Fiji has become so dependent on in its attempts to recover economically. Although relatively peaceful for now, the uncertain security climate could have a critical impact on the nation's tourism and foreign investment industry, inevitably affecting the ethnic Fijian population in the long-term.
