Wu Meets Hu -- ‘How Do You Do’?
Assessment: Directly on the heels of Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou’s inauguration on 20 May 2008, Kuomintang Party (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-Hsiung traveled to Beijing and met with China’s President Hu Jintao. Reaching a consensus to build mutual trust and set aside disputes, they agreed to a resumption of dialogue between China’s Association of Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). Subsequently, based upon an invitation from ARATS, SEF sent a delegation to Beijing for meetings scheduled 11-14 June. Hu told Wu that the basis for discussion should be based on the “1992 Consensus,” however SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung said the “1992 Consensus” would not be included in any legal documents. With no negative rhetoric from Beijing resulting from Chiang’s statement, more fundamental content may have been discussed at the Wu-Hu meeting than was publicly released.
