The G-8 Takes on Global Warming

Assessment: A far cry from the 2007 meeting when neither the U.S. nor Russia would set any goals, the main accomplishment of this year’s Group of Eight (G8) meeting was the decision to cut carbon emissions in half by 2050. Although currently non-binding, the decision effectively sets the stage for a far more aggressive action at the 2009 meeting in Copenhagen, where a binding international treaty is expected to be negotiated. Members of the G-5 developing nations disagreed with the G8 Declaration, saying that a 50% goal over 42 years is too low and too slow, but also did not make any firm pledges of their own. The G8 also adopted independent statements on Global Food Security, Counter-terrorism and Zimbabwe. With the three ‘Fs’ (Food, Fuel, and Finances) creating a mood of despair worldwide, media reaction to this year’s forum was less than stellar with some describing its accomplishments as mere words with little substance.
